Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering for Agrace HospiceCare
What is the time commitment to be a volunteer? This varies depending on the volunteer role. On average, most volunteer roles require a commitment of once a week or every other week for 2-4 hours. Some volunteer roles are a scheduled shift, while others have more flexibility. Most of our roles require a one-year commitment. We do also have some projects available for short-term volunteering or one-time groups.
How long does the training process take? The length of the application process depends on a number of factors: the applicant’s schedule, how quickly references are returned, and how quickly the applicant's TB test results are received. Missed training sessions must be made up at a subsequent training. The volunteer department works very hard to return calls and process paperwork quickly to avoid delays in the process.
I don’t have any experience working in healthcare. Can I still volunteer? Absolutely! We will provide you with the training that you need to feel comfortable and confident in your volunteer role.
I work professionally in healthcare. Do I still need to attend all of the training? The roles and perspectives of volunteers and health care professionals are very different, so we require all of our volunteers who will be working with patients to attend the entire volunteer training. You may find that you are familiar with some portions of the information covered in training, but much of it will be new.
I don’t really feel comfortable working directly with patients, but I’d like to help you out. Are there any other options available? We have many opportunities where you’ll feel comfortable. In both Dane and Rock Counties, we need volunteers in administrative/clerical roles, in the gardens, and on special-event committees. In Dane County, we also need volunteers in the kitchen, Doc Rock Cafe, hospitality desk and in the Agrace HospiceCare Thrift Shop.
