MADISON, Wis. - A Middleton man's $1.3 million gift to Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg will help expand a training program for doctors specializing in hospice and palliative care.
The money from John Peterson, whose wife, Carolyn, received care from the hospice before dying 10 years ago, will endow a fellowship program for doctors in hospice and palliative care — end-of-life care and management of pain and suffering.
"Having people who are sensitive to the issues and can provide some guidance and help is absolutely critical," said Peterson, 83, a retired UW-Madison audiologist who lives in the Attic Angel Community in Middleton.
Peterson said he didn't know much about hospice until his wife's struggle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A social worker came to their home and explained hospice services.
"I was just bowled over by the enthusiasm and the knowledge and the skill she showed," he said.
The endowment will help the one-year fellowship program expand from...

MADISON, Wis. – The state’s largest hospice announced today that, effective immediately, it is changing its name to Agrace HospiceCare after more than 30 years as HospiceCare Inc. The Madison-based nonprofit is making the move to rebrand after research findings identified a need to dispel confusion and distinguish between for-profit and nonprofit hospices within their service area.
Research through focus groups and a survey conducted by Chamberlain Research Consultants Inc. showed that the public was confused by or could not recall the HospiceCare Inc. name even though nine out of 10 people served by a hospice in Dane County were cared for by the organization, according to the most recent data available from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The CMS data showed that in Rock County, one in two people are served by Agrace HospiceCare.

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin’s largest hospice, Madison-based nonprofit Agrace HospiceCare., today released results from a scientific survey it conducted in Dane and Rock counties providing important new insights into usage and perceptions of end-of-life care. Results showed that one in two Dane and Rock county residents has had an experience with a hospice program or service.
The study, conducted by Chamberlain Research Consultants Inc., revealed that 91 percent of those surveyed would prefer to spend their last six months of life at home with family, rather than in an intensive care unit treating an illness that cannot be cured. Among those surveyed, the most common reason given for choosing hospice care for a personal situation was if others were “burdened” with providing caregiving. The second most commonly cited reason was that hospice services are available 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
The vast majority of respondents, 92 percent, indicated that...

In conjunction with National Healthcare Decisions Day April 16, Dane County healthcare providers are joining forces to help residents understand the importance of advance directives and provide tools to complete these forms. Studies have shown that having an advance directive that specified the patient's treatment preferences significantly reduced family stress.
DaneDecisionDay.org is a local resource for information about advance directives and links to downloadable Wisconsin advance directive forms. The site also provides a listing of free, upcoming community events related to advanced care planning that will help walk people through the...
