Educating the Community

As the community’s hospice, Agrace HospiceCare is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of matters related to death, dying, caregiving, grief and loss. With our guidance, our neighbors are better prepared to make decisions about the care they or their loved ones receive.

Agrace HospiceCare conducts educational presentations, seminars, conferences and inservice programs for community groups and healthcare professionals.

Agrace HospiceCare Educational Programs

Each year, Agrace HospiceCare provides guest speakers for more than 400 professional organizations, service clubs, schools, colleges, businesses, churches and faith-based communities, senior centers, neighborhood groups and other partners throughout south centralWisconsin—all at no charge. Some of the most requested topics include:

• An overview of hospice – “The Gift of Agrace HospiceCare” outlines the services provided, eligibility, access and the financial benefits of hospice.

• Ethical issues surrounding death and dying – “A Gift to Your Family” explains the importance of writing down your healthcare wishes in advance and helps participants complete a power of attorney for healthcare.

• Seminars for faith communities – “Building Connections for Spiritual Care at the End of Life” discusses how important spirituality is at the end of life.

• Seminars for the workplace – These topics address how employers and employees handle grief, loss and caregiving responsibilities. Titles include “Communicating and Working With Grieving Clients,” “When Your Client is a Caregiver,” “Grief in the Workplace” and “Caregiving in theWorkplace.”

• Making tax-deductible gifts to Agrace HospiceCare – “Building the Foundation, Leaving a Legacy for Agrace HospiceCare: How Your Gift Supports Agrace HospiceCare” details the many tax advantages that are possible by giving to Agrace HospiceCare.

• Specific seminars on grief and bereavement, volunteering and caregiving issues are also available.

Educational Opportunities for Healthcare Professionals

Inservices on Site
Agrace HospiceCare is committed to improving end-of-life care by building the skills that healthcare professionals use to deliver care. Formal and informal gatherings are held in a variety of healthcare settings to provide information on topics such as food and nutrition, symptom management, inpatient care and general hospice-related topics. These gatherings ensure optimal collaboration when serving our community.

Annual Conferences for Healthcare Professionals
Each year Agrace HospiceCare hosts conferences to help health professionals further their education on end-of-life topics. Conferences such as the “National Bereavement Teleconference—Living With Grief ” and the End-of-Life Forum provide opportunities to hear from national and regional experts, to participate in discussions and to earn continuing education credits

Agrace HospiceCare Rotation Program
Agrace HospiceCare has established a unique academic rotation program that provides experiential training to students, interns, residents, fellows and working healthcare professionals. Participants represent a wide range of disciplines, including the medical, nursing, social work, pharmacy, communications, and business schools at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, Blackhawk Technical College, Viterbo University, Edgewood College, Herzing College, Madison Area Technical College and other institutions of higher learning. Providing direct experience in an interactive interdisciplinary team environment, our objective is to improve end-of-life care in whatever discipline, setting or community these participants may practice in the future. Since its inception in 1995, nearly 1,000 participants have completed the program.
